Post a review. But still, a good summer read. Sep 25, Ginny rated it really liked it Shelves: borrowed. An Alan Gregory novel. Alan is accused of murder, Lauren is having trouble with her MS, and one of Alan's first and most dangerous patients has escaped from care. Could life get any more complicated for Dr. Stephen White does a good job of keeping us guessing and dealing with all of Alan's angst. Mar 17, John rated it really liked it. A character in the series has MS, which helps with the situations I face in reality.
Very good books. You must start at the beginning to enjoy the series. Jul 29, Sara Wright rated it it was amazing. Stephen White is my favorite mystery writer.
He is a psychologist who lives in Boulder, CO, and so I can relate to both the profession and the location. He weaves characters with thrill to create a story that you can't put down. Sep 07, Emily rated it it was ok. As per the title If I had not read another book by White, I would probably would never read him again but Kill Me is one of my favorites Feb 05, Luan rated it really liked it. Stephen White manages to craft suspense fiction that's wonderfully crafted in language and description.
I always listen to suspense on tape so I can clean house at the same time and I'll hear something read and think, wow, he's a really good writer. View all 3 comments. Mar 14, Allie rated it really liked it. This book isn't my normal genre, and was given to me on a recommendation. It was a great book, well written with decent plot twists. It is part of a series but works as a stand alone as well.
I would recommend it. Jun 25, Stefani added it Recommends it for: everyone that just likes a book for fun. This book is just pure fun. Has all of the elements I love - psychology, murder, suicide, transgender, illness, children, dogs - and all in the setting of Boulder, CO. Stephen White continues to amaze with me with the intricate plots, exciting twists and turns in each book--I will definitely keep reading this series.
Stephen White is always good for a light, enjoyable plot, especially when I'm in a book slump. The stories are not too deep, but fun to read just the same. Jan 21, Elizabeth rated it liked it. Not the best in the series. A bit disjointed, and Alan is getting cranky pants. This series gets better with every installment, a lot of pages but they go quickly with the suspense making you want to keep going to see what happens next.
Took a star off for the ending, and for three reasons. One: You usually don't expect a main character to die in a series, but Adrienne gets killed at the end. I'm sure this will be more developed in the next books since it seemed so random, but for now it seems like the sole purpose was to get Alan a second child after finding out Lauren coul This series gets better with every installment, a lot of pages but they go quickly with the suspense making you want to keep going to see what happens next.
I'm sure this will be more developed in the next books since it seemed so random, but for now it seems like the sole purpose was to get Alan a second child after finding out Lauren couldn't carry any more children.
Two: The J. Winter B. Sam basically had to kill her and make it look like a suicide, so the legal and professional ramifications for Alan don't end with her death. Again, I'm sure this will be more developed in the next books, but it would have been nice for her to have made just one mistake that could tie her to everything, so even if she died, Alan could at least be absolved from his legal troubles.
Three: I don't understand Lauren and Alan lingering marriage troubles at the end. They had both been hiding things from each other, and while both secrets had occurred before they even met, the consequences of those secrets were impeding on their marriage.
Once those secrets were told and the air was cleared, and it was clear Alan had not been cheating on Lauren as she had suspected but for some reason refused to talk to Alan about despite the fact that she was the one who would bring it up , their marriage still seems rocky; what Alan describes at the end sounds more like a polite coexistence than a marriage.
Hopefully these conflicts will also be resolved in the next books, but all of a sudden Alan and Lauren seem distant and cold with each other and totally unforgiving, despite the fact that the secrets they bore were not current and were not directed at each other. So overall, an unsatisfying ending for sure. But like I said, great suspense all the way through. Aug 15, Ed rated it it was ok Recommends it for: Psychological crime fans.
Shelves: in-inventory-billings , reviewed , mooched , crime-fiction-mystery-thriller. Six-Word Review: Tortured Psychiatrist, vengeful ex-patient, uncertain ending. Either I'm not seeing what's good in this book or many reviewers are seeing something I'm not. Maybe I remember the previous books as being better than they actually were. I could be a victim of my own expectations. Nevertheless, this story was boring at times, full of coincidences and overflowing with psychological breast-beating and ove Six-Word Review: Tortured Psychiatrist, vengeful ex-patient, uncertain ending.
Nevertheless, this story was boring at times, full of coincidences and overflowing with psychological breast-beating and overdone defense of "confidentiality". The main theme seems to be that we all have secrets and how those secrets can weigh heavily on the health of our relationships. In this case, Gregory's practice is suffering because of his connection to a murder in a previous book.
He and his M. Things get worse when an ex-patient, Michael McClelland, escapes from a Colorado mental institution looking to get even for Gregory's role in his commitment.
As the story unfolds it appears Gregory is being set up as a suspect in the disappearance of a key witness in a Grand Jury case Lauren and Alan's close buddy, Detective Sam Purdy are working on.
McClelland is always one step ahead of Gregory and it isn't until well into the book that Gregory figures out how he's doing it. There's a subplot involving a neighbor's visit to Israel that coincidentally solves one of Gregory's problems. There's also the usual tension between Sam and Allan because of the different way they look at things to say nothing of a similar tension between Alan and wife, Lauren.
In all of this, there is a good bit of suspense but I somehow knew that McClelland would be exposed, although the nature of the ending was a bit of a surprise. Finally, all the secrets come out but do not contribute to a happy ending.
In my opinion, there's no reason why Alan's and Lauren's secrets were such a big deal and why they wouldn't have shared them earlier. Both of them are from the distant past and should have lost their ability to shock, long ago. Through it all, we as readers must wade through constant explanations for why no-one can level with the others including White's favorite excuse "confidentiality". Having been a Psychological Counselor, earlier in my life, I was always under the impression that what was said in sessions could be shared based on common sense.
If the information would protect someone from being hurt, it was shareable. There is a certain amount of referring back to previous books in the series that might confuse someone reading an "Alan Gregory" story for the first time. Nevertheless, I think one could struggle through this effort without having read previous volumes. Aug 25, Jim rated it it was ok Shelves: Main characters of plot were too mundane sleepwalking through this snoozer.
The plot was basically ridiculous especially the conclusion. Over pages paperback this dud needed an editor big time. At least pages too long. Alan Gregory series. With five more books to go to finish series it looks as if this series is going to limp on into finish line. Two stars out of a possible five stars. Up to page or so I could have given this three stars. With 50 pages to go Clunker. With 50 pages to go I prayed for ending to come fast.
I will definitely recommend this book to mystery, fiction lovers. Your Rating:. Your Comment:. Read Online Download. Great book, Dry Ice pdf is enough to raise the goose bumps alone. Add a review Your Rating: Your Comment:. Dead Time by Stephen White.
