The Japanese exam is divided into three levels: elementary, intermediate, and advanced. All kanji in the elementary level have furigana over them, while the intermediate level has some furigana, and the advanced has no furigana over the kanji. Each level is comprised of a multiple choice section, a fill in the blank section, and a reading comprehension section.
The multiple choice has four answer choices. Each question is rather brief. The fill in the blank portion has two types of questions that test your kanji skills. In the first part, you must write in the correct hiragana for the given kanji, and in the second part, you must fill in the correct kanji for the spelled out hiragana.
The final reading comprehension portion has a lengthier passage with multiple choice questions that follow it. Undergraduate students must take exams for a wide selection of subjects. This includes language proficiency tests in English and Japanese. The other subjects are Math, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.
The combination of subject tests and their weight in in the evaluation process differs by your choice of field. English and Mathematics A will be especially taken into consideration to decide successful candidates. Depending on your subject, however, Japanese proficiency may become more crucial in you evaluation.
