In The Dream Seekers, Lee Irwin demonstrates the central importance of visionary dreams as sources of empowerment and innovation in Plains Indian religion.

Irwin draws on visionary dreams from published and unpublished sources that span years to describe the shared features of cosmology for twenty-three groups of Plains Indians. This comprehensive work is not a recital but an understandable exploration of the religious world of Plains Indians. The different means of acquiring visions that are described include the spontaneous vision experience common among Plains Indian women and means such as stress, illness, social conflict, and mourning used by both men and women to obtain visions.

Irwin describes the various stages of the structured male vision quest as well as the central issues of unsuccessful or abandoned quests, threshold experiences during a vision, and the means by which religious empowerment is attained and transferred. He arrives all dressed in black. Diamond cufflinks. A watch on his tanned wrist that cost more than we would ever see in a lifetime of work. He carries a single red rose for my mother. That same day, he tells me that he is my new guardian. I should have known from the very start that he had more in common with the thorns than the rose. I was too young and naive. I have come to terms with the future. From this day onward I will walk easy on the earth. Plant trees. Kill no living things. Live in harmony with all creatures. I will restore the earth where I am. And listen, listen to what it is telling me. This was written by Mary Oliver. I know it by heart. The words, the quotes are all about nature, insects, trees, and even a wayward frog with a black eye from a butterfly.

They all speak to me. There are fairies, damsels and princes turned from a frog by a kiss. Fishes alone finding love. A forest queen providing safe havens for her creatures. Enjoy the comedy laugh with a fly, ride a camel I also found the writing style arduous, and I was left feeling that vast amounts of words were used to convey the least amount of information. It lacked pace. Unfortunately, Dangerous Dream has not only completely failed to engage me and spur me to purchase either series, it has in fact achieved the opposite and deterred me from reading anything further from these authors.

Dec 18, Kribu rated it liked it Shelves: young-adult , read-in , short-story. I'm not a fan of short stories, as a rule. However, I've got the impression that this serves as a useful prequel to Dangerous Creatures - the brand new spin-off to the Beautiful Creatures series, which I, against every expectation, ended up enjoying an awful lot - so I figured I'd give it a go.

This definitely does have more of a prequel feeling than an autonomous short story. I don't think it'd make a lot of sense to anyone who hasn't read the original series; as it was, it took me some time to I'm not a fan of short stories, as a rule. Also, as much as I've been looking forward to this spin-off, Ridley and Link were not my favourite characters in the original series, so one focusing just on them We'll see.

Dec 20, Darcy rated it liked it Shelves: short-stories , magic , , e-book , ya. Ridley is my favorite character in this series, but often her mouth gets her in trouble.

With this one she does just that. I liked seeing her bested, she needs to be taken down a peg, her ego is too big. I am intrigued by what Ridley found out and to see where things go in the new series. Oct 30, Stephanie rated it it was amazing Shelves: favourites , short-stories , series , young-adult , fantasy. Ridley, on the other hand, is a dark caster: using her sexuality to get what she wants — usually all the attention in the room. An interesting approach to introduce the world as the four try to separate from Gatlin and move into adulthood with all of the challenges, changing loyalties and new adventures to come. Narration for this story is provided by Kevin T. I do, because I have one. You have to make it happen. You have to will the whole world to bend around you and the person you love. You have to fight and claw and scrap your way to her side. I'm supposed to be the bad guy.

I will always disappoint you. Your parents will hate me. You should not root for me. Without force, rhetoric is reduced to a pale form of analytic philosophy, whose reputation for relevance is richly deserved.

Additionally, this idealized pubhc sphere that Gross valorizes has never and can never exist, despite the purported concern with "the world of our everyday experience" p. The mounting modifications of Habermas's work suggest this and Habermas himself admits as much in discussing the world of new media: "the world fashioned by the mass media is a public sphere in appearance only" p. Gross lctments "a public sphere in which rationality is sidelined in favor of alien components that undermine its force" p.

Yet, what is alien? Who decides? Phiflips makes the key point that such alien components as dissensus, resistance, and incivihty are more vitcd than the imposed virtues of consensus, rationality, and civflity. Finally, even if we grant Habermas that s Europe enacted his public sphere, the historical judgment is grim. Ask the "irrational" indigenous peoples bereft of the benefits of the Enlightenment about the pacifistic nature of the rational West cind its deliberative democracies over the past years.

Ask the "improper" citizens excluded via force from force-free public spheres. We have ignored Horkheimer and Adomo's cautionary tale about the dialectic of Enlightenment at the world's peril. In proselytizing for Habermas's rational pubhc sphere cleansed of rhetorical force.

Gross sacrifices rhetoric on the altar of moral idealism. In trying to impose such a vision. Gross perforce performs and obscures the founding act of originary violence at the heart of all moralisms whfle simultaneously deploring violence. I take the opposite tack. Rhetoric is not a form of moral idealism. Ethics are irrelevant. Dreams of deliberative democracy are dangerous. Rhetoric is force.
